Learning From the Rockefellers

Justin Rockefeller is a fifth generation descendant of the Standard Oil Founder and today helps family businesses align their investments and values.

Today’s college students are part of the most socially aware generation since the 1960s. Social media has made them savvier about which businesses are operating fairly and sustainably, and they are using that knowledge to inform what they buy and where they invest.

Importantly, e-Fest and the EIX.org project itself aims to have great social and economic impact as a philanthropic initiative of the Richard M Schulze Family Foundation. And, as recognition of the importance of impact investing, e-Fest this year is offering two new prizes and recognition for best social and global impact ventures.

On EIX.org, we recently published this interview with EIX Editor Professor Kim Eddleston and Justin Rockefeller, the fifth generation of this philanthropic family. It may be especially interesting to students looking for investors for social impact and sustainability ventures.

Rockefeller, whose family fortunes were built on oil, runs a foundation that famously decided to shed its positions in fossil fuels a few years ago. In this article he talks about why he made that decision, and how current and future entrepreneurs can align their business interests with their values and invest in a better world. Worth a read!
